Reports are coming in of several young people acting agressive towards BayWave lifeguards.
A police spokesperson says police were called to BayWave in Mount Maunganui where a group of young people were acting aggressively and making threats.
They say it appears during the course of this incident, one or two of the young people assaulted the lifeguards.
"There were no injuries.
"The young people left the area, and staff were given advice on what do to if the young people returned."

I enjoy going to Baywave at least once a week and I use the training lanes to swim 1 Km. I have never seen any provocative behaviour by the lifeguards or the clients. Most of us just enjoy the experience. What I can't get over in this report is that NO action was taken to prevent these troublemakers from returning. In fact, the report implicitly EXPECTS that they will. They should be permanently barred, but that would require facial recognition software. Police being called means that parents should have been interviewed, at the very least. There seems to be a general attitude amongst the rising generation that if you don't get what you want immediately, then you should hit somebody. Hopefully, they'll pick somebody, who instead of backing down, returns the favour. A punch on the nose can enforce the message that violence is never a solution...
