A month’s worth of road rebuilding and resurfacing is being planned for State Highway 2/Hewletts Road in Mount Maunganui
Work gets underway on Sunday, April 14, for four weeks, with crews on site between 8.30pm and 5.30am, Sunday to Thursday nights.
“Every day, thousands of people travel through this part of SH2, heading off to hang out in the Mount and Pāpāmoa, deliver freight to the Port and as part of their daily commute to and from work,” says NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Waikato and Bay of Plenty maintenance and operations Roger Brady.
“A smooth road makes all these trips safer and more enjoyable,” says Roger Brady, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Regional Manager, Maintenance and Operations Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
These works will see the rebuilding of a section of SH2.
This includes new asphalt layers and road markings. During work hours there will be lane closures and detours in place.
No work will take place on Friday or Saturday nights.
“We acknowledge that this type of work can be disruptive. Closing the road provides the safest working environment for our crews, which allows them to work effectively and efficiently.”
Works breakdown
The works will be carried out in 3 phases and dates may vary across the month depending on weather and other factors.
Phase 1: Sunday, April 14, to Thursday, April 18, and then again between Sunday, April 21, to Tuesday, April 23, the westbound lanes including the SH2 Hewletts Road flyover and from Aerodrome Road to Jean Batten Drive will be closed. The detour for all vehicles is via the Golf Road roundabout, a short section of SH2, then left onto Aerodrome Road, onto Jean Batten Drive and back onto SH2. During this time all eastbound lanes will be open as normal.
Phase 2: Sunday, April 28, to Thursday, May 2, works will take place between Tasman Quay and Marina Bridge near the Whareroa Boat Ramp. During this time both westbound lanes will be fully closed while work is carried out. The available detour for all vehicles is via SH29A.
Phase 3: Sunday, May 5, to Thursday, May 16, the eastbound lanes from Tauranga Bridge Marina to Totara Street will be rebuilt. While this takes place SH2 traffic heading eastbound (heading from Tauranga to Mount Maunganui) will be moved onto the other side of the road using contraflow. (Contraflow is when vehicles use lanes normally used by traffic travelling in the opposite direction to allow room for road repairs.)
SH2 Bay Link overnight road and lane closures
People travelling between Baypark and Bayfair will continue to see road and lane closures at night. This includes overnight road closures of the SH2 Hewletts Road flyover southbound, on Maunganui Road southbound, around the Bayfair roundabout and on Matapihi Road. More information.
