Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin 139

City Waters

Water Supply:
* Council contactors City Care Ltd are working on part of Darraghs Road to upgrade some areas of old galvanised pipe. They are also setting up a work site for a water main upgrade in Lydbrook Terrace this week.
* The annual mains flushing programme will begin mid-August. This is a regular spring clean of the city's water supply network. When mains flushing is in your area you may notice a slight drop in water pressure. Notices will be placed in local newspapers and on Council's website to advise areas affected.
* One property had their water restricted this week but following discussion with the owner that restrictor has now been removed and plans are in place to pay their outstanding account as well as repair to a significant leak.
* ONGOING: watermain upgrades next to Harbour Link, in Chapel Street, Mirrielees Road and Marsh Street.
* ONGOING: Pipe laying work in Maxwells Road; pipe connections in Landscape Road; under-road thrusting in Chapel Street, Bureta Road, Ngatai Road and Kulim Avenue.

Drainage:
* Five sewer problems were reported this week:
o In Egret Avenue, a home owner reported a fault with his private sewer system. Investigations showed it was a partial fat blockage in the Council main pipeline. This was jet cleaned to restore service.
o In Hawea Street, an ongoing sewer connection problem was found to be on a private property. The property owner has organised a plumber to fix it.
o In Oceania Sands Way, a plumber reported a partial blockage in the Council system. This had cleared itself by time the contractor arrived on site and it is likely that the lower flow rates to date in this newer area may have contributed to the blockage.
o In Cambridge Road, a private gully dish overflowed resulting in wastewater entering a nearby street stormwater sump. This minor overflow was vacuumed out of the sump and the property owner asked to call a plumber to fix the problem.
o In Chapel Street, a sewer line was blocked with debris outside the Mobil Service Station. Investigation found a damaged pipe that has now been repaired . The rest of the pipe line was checked by CCTV to make sure it was in good condition as this section of road is to be resurfaced.
* The Pollution Prevention team were called to a paint spill into the Aviation Avenue drain. They located the source but were not able to clean it up as it had washed down stream. It is suspected that this may have been the source of similar stormwater pollution incidents.
* Work to fix a problematic sewer connection off Churchill Road is being done this week, following ongoing blockage issues and a recent sag in the connection.
* A sewer pipe exposed after a small slip in recent bad weather is being reinstated in Bellevue Road.
* Work will start this week to fix a slump in the open drain off Esmeralda Street. Approximately 15m of the bank will be stabilised with rock to correct the slump and protect an adjoining property's driveway.
* A few minor road flooding issues were attended to last weekend following a period of rain.

Inflow Reduction Project:
* Council has had a good response to date from property owners in the Esk Street area who have been reminded by phone to advise us when they have fixed their non complying gully traps. Property owners not able to be contacted will be visited by Council staff.
* Gully trap inspections have been completed in the Royal Palms/Fashion Island area this week. Further inspections into other parts of the wider Royal Palms area are likely to begin in the next few weeks. Affected property owners will be notified before they start.

City Projects

* Gordon Carmichael Reserve carpark - rain has delayed final sealing of the carpark on numerous occasions.
* Mt Drury Playground is now finished and open for use.
* A footpath from Grace Avenue is being constructed this week to allow wheelchair access from the car park to the liberty swing. Vegetation removal and minor planting to finish the Reserve development.

Parks and Leisure

* Tauranga Careers Expo will be held at the QEYC from 24 - 27th July. This is part of the Western Bay @ Work project that was launched on Monday night by Phil O'Reilly.
* Maintenance and improvement work on the Mount base track is scheduled to commence in the next couple of weeks. Exact start date dependant on contractor availability. The work involves repairing areas above and below the track where erosion has caused washouts and instability. As with the work undertaken last winter, where possible, the base track will remain open. The ability to keep the track open is assessed on an on-going basis throughout the works.
* The Oruahine track will be closed at times for abseilers to complete some weed control work on the bluffs above.
* Forest and bird volunteers have increased their rodent control lines on Mauao from 45 bait stations to 85 bait stations. Volunteers will be busy filling the bait stations.
* The street tree outside Starbucks on Maunganui Road is scheduled to be removed in the next couple of weeks due to damage to the tree pit it sits in. Mount Main Street have been consulted.
