The Department of Conservation is working on two major projects in the Bay of Plenty - one in the Karangahake Gorge and one on the Wairere Falls Track.

“The iconic Waikino Railway Station starts the journey and connects visitors to the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkways and the Hauraki Rail Trail,” says Tauranga supervisor Colette Wi.

“DOC has been working with contractors to repair rotted sections and add the finishing touches with paint.

“Any old building like this needs some love – we’re pleased to have completed this facelift so it can continue to be a window into the past for years to come.

“With a blend of natural beauty and gold-mining history, Karangahake Gorge offers a variety of recreation opportunities to visitors.

Track upgrades

“DOC and Wairere Mahi are working alongside contractors to upgrade structures and the track surface at Wairere Falls Track in the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park.

“Work is occurring during the week, with the track still open to the public on weekends.

“Work commenced at the end of January, and the track is due to re-open fully in June.

“It’s a popular track and visitors have been increasing year-on-year, we’re looking forward to these upgrades making the walking experience safer and more enjoyable.”
