A smash and grab from a Tauranga store is being used a reminder to urge people to report any suspicious activity to police.

At about 1.20am, police were informed that a store at Fraser Cove shopping centre had been broken into. 

Tauranga area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton says a stolen Mazda vehicle had been parked in front of the store entrance, and the alleged offenders used hoods to disguise their heads and faces. 

He says a hammer was used to “smash” into the store.

Clifford says about $15,000 worth of sunglasses and watches were stolen.

It’s then alleged that the accused ran from the shop and left in the stolen Mazda.

Police located the abandoned vehicle with its window smashed and ignition barrel damaged.

Clifford says CCTV footage and thorough police work led to a Tauranga address where officers found the stolen property. He says the property has been returned to the owners.

Two people aged 22 and 24, were to appear in Tauranga District court this morning. 

“It’s satisfying to be able return property of this value to a business that’s been targeted," Clifford says.

“We understand the effect burglaries and prolific offending can have on the retail businesses in our community and are committed to holding offenders to account.”
