Welcome Bay fire: Neighbours told to close windows

Update, 6pm: Fire and Emergency NZ say fire services have now left the scene of a house fire in Welcome Bay.

Emergency services were called to Waikite Rd about 12.24pm.

The fire had spread down the back of the family home, which was unoccupied, and the burnt grass had been extinguished.

Three fire trucks from Greerton and Tauranga fire stations attended the house fire.

"We have now left the scene," says a FENZ spokesperson.

Earlier, 4.41pm  Firefighters are battling a house fire in Welcome Bay and nearby residents have been advised to close their windows.

Emergency services were called to Waikite Rd about 12.24pm, Fire and Emergency Northern Communications Centre shift manager Joshua Pennefather said.

The fire was ongoing, and an investigator was on location to determine the cause of the blaze.

Nearby residents should close windows to reduce smoke inhalation and avoid the area until the fire is controlled.

No injuries to the firefighters were reported.
