Re: ‘So, we were wrong, probably. And they were right. Definitely!’ (letters page 24, The Weekend Sun, October 4 edition).
This letter was recently published praising what a great job had been done with the Cameron Rd upgrade that has just finished.
The writer was saying how the design and concept was great and was working well with lots of cyclists on it.
The truth of the matter is that the design is flawed; and I will now explain why. The bus lanes are only functional in sections while several areas have barriers so buses cannot use them at all.
There is no room between 16th Ave and 17th Ave for a bus lane at all. In fact, there is no off-lane parking for a bus stop either.
The bus stop is just painted on the left of the two lanes for traffic while just a short distance away is a large area of garden full of plants that would have made a suitable bus stop. I’ve travelled Cameron Rd a lot at various times of the day and I’ve hardly seen any cyclists at all.
Pedestrians are not many at all. Frankly, it’s been a huge waste of ratepayers’ money and it’s quite fortunate that the second stage of this plan has been stopped as it has done nothing to increase the traffic flow.
