Baskets of community spirit

The Christmas spirit is strong in one particular street in Bethlehem.

Neighbours on Glenpark Cres have rallied to put together hampers of holiday goodies for their rubbish collectors and mail delivery drivers and have so much left over that they’ll be donating the rest to Tauranga Foodbank.

“Back in the day, I remember we used to leave a bottle of beer for the milkman, so it’s just bringing back that tradition and being more community-minded. We all love to do it,” said organiser Vicki Eaves.

The hampers are full of scorched almonds, assorted chocolate boxes, potato chips, along with fizzy drinks, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

“We did it for the first time last year,” said resident Chris Baty. “The community spirit is a good thing to foster.”

“After I made up the hampers for our hard-working mail delivery man and rubbish collectors, we still had a truckload of food, so we’re able to donate.

“Last year, we gave the excess to women’s refuge and this year it’s foodbank,” said Eaves. “Everyone tends to get tucked away in their houses, but on our street we all know each other’s names and can wave out to say ‘hi’. Everyone loves to be connected – especially at Christmas.”
