The nautiest girls of them all will be angling for a fun fishing day next month.

Summer means the return of the Nauti Girls Fishing Competition by Bowentown Boating and Sport Fishing Club.

The annual fishing event is for women only and always hooks in huge amounts of females wanting to have fun in the sun with friends.

The idea of the harbour-only event is to get women out on the water, said co-organiser Jocelyn Madsen, and get them fishing.

“There’s a massive push to get our female members and others more involved in events and it’s such a great day out for women. It’s girls-only so they’re not up against the big boys.

“The biggest thing about the event is having fun.”

The competition has been run for around 15 years and is their second-biggest tournament of the year, behind the junior fishing day. Last year there were 135 entries and organisers are expecting the same sort of numbers.

The women can skipper themselves or organise a “guy skipper”.

The social side of the tournament is hugely popular, with many teams and individuals going to great efforts to impress the judges in the fashion stakes.

There’s a fashion parade at prizegiving which includes prizes for best-dressed crew and best-dressed boat.

Fishing prizes (first, second, third and fourth) are for heaviest snapper, trevally, kahawai and first in heaviest kingfish.

There’s a celebratory night with a band held at the club after prizegiving.
