UPDATE 1.08PM: State Highway 29, over the Kaimai Range, is now open.
The road was closed earlier today as emergency services dealt with incident on State Highway 29 involving a truck carrying chlorine in the Lower Kaimai area.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said crews were called to an “incident involving a chemical” about 9.55am.
A police spokesperson told the Waikato Herald a truck had broken down on the Kaimai Range.
“The truck is understood to contain chlorine, which is reacting due to the inclement weather.”
Police said SH29 was closed between Valley View Rd and Soldiers Rd.
The road is now open.
EARLIER
“Motorists are asked to delay travel or follow indicated diversions.”
In a social media alert New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said there were reports of a possible hazardous substance spillage on SH29.
In a follow up statement, NZTA said a truck carrying a hazardous substance understood to be chlorine, has been forced to stop for safety reasons.

I guess this is another way to infiltrate it into our water supply!!!
Quite right to respond to this incident - it is a poison after all.
We don't need it in our domestic water systems.
