Update, 5pm:  State Highway 1 at the Tauranga-Taupō bridge between Heuheu Parade and Hingapo Road, has reopened following a two-vehicle crash this morning.

"Police would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation," police said.

Earlier, 2.50pm: Six people are reported to have suffered moderate to serious injuries following a vehicle crash in the Bay of Plenty.

"Emergency services are responding to a crash involving two vehicles on State Highway 1 at the Tauranga-Taupō bridge between Heuheu Parade and Hingapo Road," police said.

Police were called to the scene around 11.25am.

"At this stage six people are reported to have suffered moderate to serious injuries."

Police said the road is blocked in both directions and motorists are advised to delay travel and avoid the area.
