Rangiuru School broke with tradition and held its school Ag Day on a Saturday and combined it with a country fair.

And it proved to be a resounding success.

Principal Hannah Mortimore said everyone was blown away by the numbers at the even.

“It was jam-packed, our playground and field were full of people the whole day. There were generations of families all enjoying the day together.

“It was really heart-warming to see and exactly what we wanted to achieve.”

Generally, calf and lamb days are held on school days, and the school hasn’t held a fair for “a wee while”.

Preparing, leading and calling the young animals took up the first part of the day, with the fair starting around 11am.

“We had a really good turnout for the first part of the day and a lot of extra people from the community came to see it.”

Mortimore said the day was a traditional family day out with good feels and a buzzing vibe.

“It was really popular, I’ve never seen so many people at the school.”

Attractions included a tombola, rides in a vintage Rolls-Royce, face painting, pony rides, games, music, traditional stalls and food options.

“It was incredible to see how many people from the wider Te Puke community made the effort to come to us.

“We are a little country school. Our motto is ‘small but exceptional’ and that definitely shone on Saturday. It was lovely for everyone to see what we have.”

Mortimore said a strong group of parent helpers combined with staff to make the day a success.

She has been principal since March and said she felt in some ways the fair was the culmination of the school community coming together, getting to know her and bonding over the past few months.

“Saturday showed what a community can do when you all pull together, and it made me feel really proud to be part of this community.”

Money raised at the fair will go towards a new playground.
