Paving the way for smoother days on SH29

Road rebuild on SH29 Kaimai range

State Highway 29 from Tauriko to the summit of the Kaimai Range is a key corridor and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is focused on strengthening it this summer, so it remains safe and reliable and meets the needs of everyone who uses it.

Between now and May 2026, there are five sites on the Bay of Plenty side of the Kaimai Range where the road will be rebuilt and resurfaced and one on the Waikato side.

A significant rebuild is currently underway of around 1.5 kilometres of SH29 near Valley View Rd. Once the work is finished, drivers can look forward to a safer, smoother drive along this stretch of state highway.

As well as the road rebuild, SH29 Kaimai Range will close for 5 nights, from Sunday 30 November to Thursday 4 December, between 7.30pm and 4am each night (reopening early Friday morning).

These closures are necessary to complete urgent scaling works on the Ruahihi Bluffs near the Ruahihi Power Station. This work will involve abseilers working above the road to dislodge vegetation and rocks from the top and faces of the bluffs.

NZTA is taking full advantage of the closures to undertake other work at multiple sites along the state highway. This includes structural asphalt rehabilitation, chipseal resurfacing, localised drainage works, road marking and surface repairs at numerous sites along the highway.

Further east the Tauriko Enabling Works remain ongoing between Belk and Cambridge roads.

Roadworks may be postponed due to rain or other factors that disrupt the weekly schedule. Check the NZTA Journey Planner for the latest travel information and journey times before starting your journey: journeys.nzta.govt.nz
