Motorists urged to take care as rain intensifies

Drivers are advised to check road conditions via the NZTA Journey Planner.

MetService has heavy rain warnings in effect for the Coromandel Peninsula until 11am tomorrow.

A heavy rain watch is also in place for Waitomo, Waikato and Taupō, along with a heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty.

Andrew Brosnan, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi journey manager for the Waikato, said people should take extra care on the roads as weather conditions were set to intensify.

“Heavy rain can increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and coastal zones – conditions like these can change rapidly and make driving hazardous,” said Brosnan.

“Please slow down, increase following distances and drive to the conditions. Watch for surface flooding, slips and debris and avoid driving through floodwaters,” he said.

People were advised to check road conditions before heading out via the NZTA Journey Planner.

“Our crews are on standby to respond to any incidents, and any updates will be provided via official channels,” said Brosnan.

Lights!!

Driving in torrential heavy rain today - so many cars without lights on making it hard to see them. I had a Police car behind me so they would have noticed this as well. Obviously, nothing they can do about it. Cars should be like they are in Europe - as soon as you turn on the ignition, the lights come on, no matter what the weather. Works so well over there, we could learn from them. Would be easy to legislate for - make it law at the next WOF..

Absolutely agree with you AND I like the idea of headlights coming on with ignition so much that I'm booking my car into auto electrician to get that done. Thank you.
