Tauranga City Councillors have received a 15.56% pay rise, increasing their annual salaries from $141,064 to $163,000.

Mayor Mahé Drysdale will earn $193,402 a year, up from $186,130, and deputy mayor Jen Scoular’s salary is $178,192, up from $161,285.

The councillors set their remuneration at a Tauranga City Council meeting today.

The Remuneration Authority set the mayor’s salary at $193,402 and the pool for councillors at $1,482,192, which was divided among them. The entire pool must be spent.

Councillors will earn $163,000 annually.

Drysdale said: “I think this is sensible”.

“Obviously, we’ve got a pool of money that we have to allocate and ... tried to keep that fairly consistent.

“Everyone gets paid the same with additional responsibilities for the deputy mayor, that her salary is between my salary and the councillors’.”

The Remuneration Authority also introduced a new allowance for elected members to install home security systems.

Drysdale recommended all elected members were eligible “on the proviso that we ensure we get value for money”.

He recommended a $4500 allowance for buying and installing the system, and $1000 annually for monitoring, callouts, and repairs.

“I’m sure we could install a system for under that for most people.”

Drysdale said there had been some “issues around the country” regarding security.

“I think it’s a sensible thing to have.”

Drysdale said elected members would need to submit a “threat assessment” application before getting a home security system.

“It doesn’t give you an automatic right to it, but if any of the elected members are worried about their safety, they are able to do that.”

If an elected member’s position became vacant, all allowances would be “scaled back proportionally” to the period of the financial year that the member was in position, Drysdale said.

Drysdale and council chief executive Marty Grenfell would approve all claims. Scoular and one other councillor would approve mayoral claims.

Council-controlled organisations - Bay Venues, Tauranga Art Gallery Trust, Tourism Bay of Plenty and Te Manawataki o Te Papa Limited - received no funding increase for the 2026/27 financial year.

The organisations were expected to continue being “financially prudent in the tough economic and cost-of-living environment Tauranga ratepayers are experiencing”.

Bay Venues - the council’s largest council-controlled organisation - may be exempted from the $0 increase, subject to council approval.

This would be discussed during the annual plan process.

Where to start on this disgusting news. I spoke to a friend who works at council and frontline staff received an increase of 1 -1.5%. Then these animals at the trough decide they are important enough to receive 15x more than council staff. In a cost of living crisis, when their salaries are already quite significant these self-entitled creatures decide they are worth a 15% pay rise above everyone else.
Oh well, guess thats part of why our rates increased so much.
Makes me want to vomit.

Really? So glad I left a few years ago. It's embarrassing what Tauranga has become and how residents still vote in losers that are only in it for themselves.

Laughable....

When the average rate payers are hoping to get an increase salary to keep up with inflation, around 3-4%, and yet the city councilors are getting over 15% salary increase!!! Absolutely no integrity there and they should be ashamed of their greed. I agree with a salary increase every couple of years to keep up with inflation, but this is well beyond that. Guess who'll be funding that .... the ratepayers who only get 3% increases. Absolutely abhorrent behaviour from those in a position of power. Lost my respect ... one of the many ratepayers paying for this...

This is why inflation is so high

Greedy councils , greedy staff.

I had a 0% pay rise this year. Why should I have to pay for their payrise?

The government has blamed councils for high inflation -- their greed is astounding.

The only thing higher than their pay rises are my rates rises !!

what the hell is going on

Over a 15% pay rise!!!!
Why?
Do these people know that there are many households struggling to pay bills and these guys pay themselves big salaries.
I wish I could stop paying my rates!!!
Disgusting.

Outrageous salary increase

How can this be justified? Any such increases should be limited to the CPI as should rates. These elected people need to get into the real world and understand who is paying for these extravagances.

Ridiculous

Time for rates increases to be bound by law and/or independently regulated like they are in Australia. The average worker probably hasn't had a 15% pay increase in the last few years combined.

Unbelievable

Mean while people are struggling to heat their home and put food on the table. Emergency service personal beg and plea for a fraction of the pay rise these self entitled elite give themselves. They should be ashamed. How they look at themselves in the mirror bewilders me. The main ring leader of the circus doesn’t even live here- absolute mockery

Shame on YOU!

Look at you all with smiles on your faces! Not a single thought of others struggling to survive, to simply pay their bills. A lot of people are living from pay packet to pay packet, AND we don't even get the 'inflation' payrise! Hey take a drive down to your precious rowing club and spot the homeless that have been living in cars for the past 2 yrs. Maybe you can share your money around with them! I'm over TCC's rose tinted glasses and pipe dreams, ALL at the ratepayers expense :(

What a surprise!

Let's call this for what it is;

snouts in the trough.

No wonder their first thought is for ratepayer-subsidised home security systems

Insane

This is so wrong..we are struggling to pay basic bills power ,mortgage, rates especially ,food and we have not had a pay rise since covid but all these bills keep going up, yet over 15% for you people..talk about rob the poor to feed the rich.

Council with no shame

Posted on 19-11-2025 20:37 | By goldenjade

Rate payers have it in thier own hands , Demand a time & motion study amongst a whole raft of no gooders that could not give a damn about Tauranga or the rate payers . Talk is cheap , too much time to procrastinate .

We are the fools if they never had the funds there would be minimal rises !!!!!!!!!!

STOP PAYMENT OF RATES

They need the 15%

Posted on 19-11-2025 22:25 | By Moneywise

We shouldnt be hard on the councilors...they need the payrise to pay thier Tauranga rates. It is just a pity the rest of us dont have such a generous boss😄. Whoops...who is thier boss and whose money is paying the 15%...COULD IT BE US ...THE RATEPAYER🤔....Pitty we didnt have and election in Tauranga last month like all the other councils. Surley they have done enough in just 12 months!

As if not bad enough

As if it's not bad enough telling us this, you rub salt in the wounds by posing for big cheesy, smug smiles, look at us.
Well here's an idea - look at your ratepayers and struggling city. In fact don't just look - SEE and perhaps even listen.
Do you really think we want to know?

However, the remuneration authority is an independent statutory body in New Zealand, established by the Remuneration Authority Act 1977, that determines the salary, allowances, and superannuation for roles in the public sector, including Members of Parliament, the Judiciary, and specified statutory officers. Its responsibilities also extend to setting remuneration for local government and community board members.

I wish

That they had kept this news quiet - not reported on it - rubs salt in the wound in terms of the extortionate rates we have to pay together with the increasing costs to live and survive here with most employers refusing payrises / giving ones that don't even keep up with inflation. Everyone here is going backwards fast....except for the Councillors

Let them eat cake they cried

Posted on 20-11-2025 09:19 | By an_alias

Was a minimum 10% pay rise by not employing some people and mainly accounting adjustment.
But yeah lets just give ourselves a 15% increase and let them eat cake.

Completely tone deaf

Posted on 20-11-2025 10:36 | By Kancho

Oh dear any credibility blown . They should refuse a rise as simple as that and if not supposedly possible should at least donate to a Tauranga charity project. I don't wear that have earned it.
I'm still reeling from the cost of the story towers they occupy to state out over the peasants .
Fifteen year contract $96,542,900
Or $6,129,511 per year for building and in top parking $313,352 per annum !! Oh don't forget the coffee machines plus office fit out !!

And

Posted on 20-11-2025 11:01 | By Kancho

Another article how our water is going to cost more. So a core business and must have but we get stuff we don't need or want and this lot . All in a framework of excessive spending on nice to haves but can't afford and now unconscionable greediness Worse they are ensconced until 2028 ! No confidence vote needed

Absolutely disgusting

Posted on 20-11-2025 12:26 | By EK

So the more you waste taxpayer money, ruin businesses in the City, the higher the pay rise you get from the tax payer coffers. Has anyone else received such a high percentage pay ruse? I very much doubt it.

Disgusting

Not one single Councillor declined it.
There will be many very angry people over this news.
No wonder they are thinking about their personal safety...
We know that serving on the Council is a job you should take on because you care about the community; but this shows it is a nice soft career path.
No sign of any performance related pay, no Key Perfomance Indicators (KPI), just an arbitrary Gimme! as they splash at the trough.
If any of them had a shred of integrity, and they were in touch with the community, they would have recognized how immoral this is.
I had a polite letter from the electricity company saying my (already outrageous) electricity rates were going up. No appeal, no acceptable justification, nothing I can do (maybe switch).
Guess I should have taken "Morepork for Mayor" more seriously...
