Mount meters on the agenda

A plan to introduce parking meters in Mount Maunganui, the last bastion of free parking in the Western Bay of Plenty, has been changed at the committee stage.
Parking meters were among a range of options including a one way street system, angle parking and seasonal parking regimes being considered for Mount Maunganui.

The options are included in parking management plans prepared for the Mount, Greerton and Tauranga for the council's projects and services committee.
Committee chairman David Stewart says the committee decided against making the Mount's holiday visitors pay for parking, but have instead decided to introduce it for commercial owners and operators through a targeted rate.
There is pay and display parking at the Phoenix car park at the Mount.
There used to be pay and display parking in Greerton, but it was unpopular and was removed after it was vandalised.
The parking plans have been developed with the three mainstreet organisations. Other parking proposals at the Mount include one way traffic on The Mall with angled parking to create an extra 40 car parks, central angled parking on Prince Avenue for another 17 car parks, one way along Adams Avenue from The Mall to Maunganui Road to create 12 additional car parks.
Seasonal time limits enforced by charging are proposed for the new parking precincts – and for the boat ramp parking in Pilot Bay.
'We are thinking of having a four hour limit on Marine Parade, and having that managed and enforced to allow for greater turnover of traffic,” says David.
The parking proposals will be subject to public feedback.

Here we go again with parking issues i see the Tauranga district counicl has money in there eyes and looking to scare holiday makers off. One way systems in the Mt will not work with the volume of traffic in and around the area over the christmas period i think they need to look at deailing with it in a more active way involving the people that live in the area and getting the emergency agenies involved is well so we have a flowing traffic system.

Worth a look

I guess a one way system would allow angle parking both sides and you can fit more angle parks than parallel ones. A time limit in the holiday season would at least allow more people to get a park instead of them being hogged by a few. Maybe not so stupid after all. Mr R. Prawn and Mr N. Steed seem to have fallen into the just criticise everything without thinking trap.
