The mayor's explanations about Tauranga City's financial situation continue to be challenged by Citizens Advocacy Tauranga.
CAT president Leo Mangos says the mayor's figures don't add up.
'Mayor Crosby's claim that CAT criticised the council's debt management is incorrect,” says Leo.
CAT president Leo Mangos.
'CAT did criticise the accumulation of debt by the mayor and council and the absence of ideas, policies and actions to generate wealth to pay the debt back.”
When CAT asked the mayor if he has a credible plan to create the economic activity required to repay Tauranga's debt, CAT was directed towards council policies, says Leo.
The mayor failed to respond to the questions of whether he considered a 50 per cent rates rise in four years affordable, or how increasing the rates burden as a percentage of incomes helps create a strong vibrant economy, says Leo.
In response to the mayor's claim the council has taken more than $300 million in spending out of the 10 Year Plan, and reduced costs by more than $100 million over the same period, says Leo.
'Mayor Crosby has been unable or unwilling to provide explanations or references to back up his statements.” says Leo.
CAT is sticking with its claims on the Southern Pipeline Project and the Tauranga Indoor Sports and Recreation Centre.
Peer review criticisms of the project remain unanswered by the council, says Leo.
The wrangle over the TISEC has been confused by comparing different Waikato sports centres.
CAT has been comparing the $41 million TISEC with an eight court Hamilton Sports Centre that cost $22.7 million, says Leo while Stuart Crosby has been comparing the TISEC price with an incorrect one of $8 million for that Waikato centre.
