Today is the great Willow Street Transport Centre rematch at Tauranga City Council.
At full council, the elected members have the opportunity to revoke their previous resolution and re-open the debate on the site location of the transport centre.
The previous decision was made with several councillors absent. Even though the absentees were evenly spread between the two main voting factions, the safety of the decision was one of the factors raised in the aftermath.
Also questioned was how the numbers for and against the Willow Street site were handled by council staff. What appeared to be considerable public opposition was presented in the staff report as support for Willow Street.
The deciding factor in the original vote was the fact Willow Street attracted a $450,000 government subsidy. This money has now been approved – for Willow Street only.
While the scope of today's debate has been widened to include options besides Durham Street and Willow Street, the subsidy was granted to Willow Street when compared only with Durham Street.
A decision on any third option will set aside the subsidy and require investigations to resume from scratch.
