Tauranga City Councillor Hayden Evans has pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge in Tauranga District Court and says he has now adopted a policy of not drinking at all because of the difficulty in guessing alcohol levels.
A blood test found Hayden was driving in Willow Street on December 4 with a blood alcohol level of 139 milligrams of alcohol per litre of blood.
Community Magistrate Lesley Jensen convicted and fined Hayden $650 plus court costs of $130, plus $93 medical expenses and a $110 analyst's fee, plus mileage of $3.32 – and disqualified him from driving for six months beginning today.
She took into account his previous clear record.
Representing himself, Hayden said December 4 was the eighth time he had been stopped.
'All times prior to that I had been below the limit or had no alcohol at all. I find the approach by some of the officers in this case to be somewhat aggressive.”
He referred to police cars 'screaming into a car park” to breath test him after Thursday night salsa dancing and following him for some distance before stopping him.
Hayden also apologised to the courts.
