Tauranga City Council has received $78,276 and Western Bay of Plenty District Council, $31,780, from waste levy funding collected under the Waste Minimisation Act.
Tony Ryall and Simon Bridges.
The Waste Minimisation Act discourages waste disposal by imposing a levy of $10 per tonne of waste on disposal facilities, such as landfills. Half of the money collected is given to councils to spend on minimising waste and the remaining levy money, minus administration costs, is made available for waste projects and education through the Waste Minimisation Fund.
Tauranga MP Simon Bridges and Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall are both happy with this financial outcome for the region.
'Tauranga has received $78,276 from the levy, which is to support work to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. The obvious benefits are reducing harm to the environment and ensuring resources are used efficiently,” says Simon.
"In the Western Bay of Plenty $31,780 will be available to see this work done. On top of that, people who have ideas on how to reduce waste are being encouraged to apply to the Waste Minimisation Fund for financial support," says Tony.
