Bad news for bookworms

Tauranga City Councillors are going ahead with plans to reduce library services to save money.
The libraries are 90 per cent ratepayer funded, but council decided last year that this will drop to 80 per cent over the next five years and consequently city libraries will have to double their revenue over that period.

Councillors have voted for consultation on charging 50 cents for all adult loans not already subject to charges for the next three years, after which it is proposed to increase it to 80 cents.
It is not proposed to charge for children and teen items.
Councillors accepted libraries general manager Jill Best's report and her proposed savings will be incorporated in council's annual budget.
She proposes reducing the staff budget 10 per cent over three years through a combination of attrition, new technology and the reduced library use caused by the proposed charges.
The decision by councillors to run down stock levels by almost 10 per cent to a reduced level of service over the next two years will also save money by reducing the need to buy as many new books.
The proposal will cull about 30,000 items from library shelves, almost as many as the 40,000 total items in the Mount library.
The mobile library service will also be reviewed.
Mount Library will remain where it is for now. Councillors do not support a public/private partnership for the development of Greerton library.
If the proposed charges are approved as part of the Annual Plan process they will take effect from July 2010.
Library users will be able to comment on the proposed changes in March as part of the Annual Plan submission process. The public's opinions can be presented to council through submissions. Formal submission forms will be available in March.

yet another case of council taking services away from rate payers. they put our rates up every year and yet seem to take more away from the rate payers than give back.

unfair on families

it will be really hard for families on a tight budget like ourselves to be able to afford to go the library! It is the best, healthiest FREE thing to do as a family and we love our library but would struggle to justify having to pay to borrow books :(
