PSA opposes library charges

The Public Service Association, which represents librarians, is opposing moves by Tauranga City Council to charge adults for non fiction books.
As part of the annual plan process the council is considering a 50 cent fee to adults borrowing books from its public libraries, going up to 80 cents after three years.

'Public libraries have a proud and long-standing history of providing books and other information to the public free of charge,” says Public Service Association national secretary Brenda Pilott.
'We oppose any move that undermines the principle that public libraries and their services are free and accessible to all members of the public.
'New Zealanders value their public libraries because they're free and accessible and this is reflected in their high usage,” says Brenda.
Libraries play an essential role in enhancing literacy and providing information that support our education system and our democracy. Charging a fee to borrow books will restrict access to that literature and information says Brenda and undermine these two key elements of our society.
The number of books issued by Ashburton's library dropped when a $1 charge was placed on borrowing books less than two years old and Ashburton subsequently dropped the charge says Brenda.
'We hope the Tauranga City Council looks at the Ashburton experience and withdraws its proposal to charge adults a fee for borrowing books from Tauranga's public libraries,” says Brenda.

Education and information for all

This is an appalling idea, charging people for books will only have negative effects - those on a low wage and the elderly will feel ostracised from the free learning and enjoyment books offer us. And many others will stop using the Library in protest. It is the right of all NZers to have access to free information regardless of our personal circumstances and this sort of proposal is making the TCC look mean and greedy.

No such thing as a RIGHT to free books

Nonsense! There is no such thing as a RIGHT to free books The definition of the word RIGHTS is: Something you do not have to ask somebodys elses permission for ALSO, they are not FREE Ratepayers are FORCED to pay for them. There are other ways to provide free books that do not involve the use of FORCE and BULLY TACTICS on ratepayers. If it is a RIGHT to be entitled to get free books, then it should also be a RIGHT to be allowed to keep the money that you earn without it being taken by force by the council. The council only do this because people like you DEMAND they rob others - How immoral is that? Thats not a very civilised thing to do is it - demanding the council take peoples money just because you think they should, or is that kind of behaviour acceptable now? The problem is that as a nation we have come so used to demanding "What is the govt or council going to do about it" instead of doing something about it ourselves. They have taken up the challenge because it justifies their employment and keeps them in a job. The more we demand they do, the more they charge us. The more they charge us, the more you MOAN. The council and Government should be involved in the ESSENTIALS ONLY - Let private enterprise, and charities provide the rest.
