The pedestrian track between Jones Street and Chadwick Road is expected to be closed for about three months after being wrecked by the blow out of a large water pipe on Wednesday.
This event has created a number of large tomo holes on and around the track and the area immediately around the water break and the track is considered highly dangerous and unstable.
The recommended safe alternative route is through Bongard Street to Tuthill Street to Hynds Road to Chadwick Road.
Council is working to fix the water mains break but the area surrounding this work will need to be checked and stabilised before the track can be reopened to public access.
The area is now closed as it is a work site and will remain so until further notice.
