'Aggressive water conservation” is being called for to keep water supplied to the Tauranga suburbs of Bethlehem, Brookfield, Otumoetai and Matua.
At 4.30pm today the Cambridge Road reservoirs that supply the city's western suburbs were down to 32 per cent capacity prior to evening peak use.
The broken piece of pipe that has caused the need for water conservation as it is replaced.
The main water main to the reservoirs ruptured on Wednesday evening, leaving about a third of the city relying on a supply line that cannot cope with normal demand.
Repairs to the main water main are expected to be completed later Friday night after which there will be 10-11 hours of sterilisation and pressurisation before the repaired pipeline is restoring reservoir levels.
City council communication advisor Marcel Currin says they are hoping for all systems to be back to normal about midday Saturday.
'Please conserve water today and through Saturday morning,” says Marcel.
'The ideal outcome is that no one goes without water before full supply can be renewed. Aggressive water conservation by everyone at this point will make this more likely.”
