Tauranga City Council contractors will be working this week on cleaning out the city's water pipes. Over the next two weeks, water mains in Pyes Pa, Welcome Bay, Ohauiti and Maungantapu, working toward Matapihi and Bayfair will be flushed.
There was an unexpected flash at the start of the week when a contractor working on Cameron Road burst a pipe when his digger was excavating the area.
Other work to be completed by the Tauranga City Council in the week beginning 14 September as reported in the council's weekly bulletin.
Water Supply:
* A number of programmed water shut downs will be happening this week in the following areas: Mansfield, Chapel and Mission Street. Affected customers will be advised by letter drop.
* Pillans Watermain Upgrade - Connecting up pipe work in Maxwells Road and Ngatai Road.
* Work to install additional water connection supplies in Maungatapu is well underway with directional drilling of the water main beginning in the Hammond to Hinerua Street area. Work is on track for completion by mid September.
* Fire hydrant marking and servicing continues in the Otumoetai area and throughout the city over the coming year.
* Council contactors City Care Ltd are continuing work to install new water mains in Mansfield Street.
* The new water supply link outside 30 Ohauiti Road has now been completed.
* Ohauiti High Level water supply reservoir - water main installation now underway. The construction of this new reservoir includes installation of over 1.1 km of new water main and will service the Ohauiti area. It's expected to be completed by January 2010.
Drainage:
* Two weeks ago the Pollution Prevention Team were called out to a food waste discharge from an industrial site to the Maleme Street drain .Ongoing work with the company continues to prevent further discharges. This site has now been high pressure jetted to ensure all contaminants in the pipeline are removed.
* An area-wide audit of auto dismantlers and metal recyclers is due to start in conjunction with EBOP. Businesses will be audited on their business practices in respect to containment and treatment of contaminants.
* Responses from the petroleum companies are being assessed following the completion of the service station audits approximately three weeks ago.
* An inventory of the Council's and NZTA's stormwater treatment devices is being updated to now include all the newly installed devices associated with the harbour bridge project and the recently completed Hewletts Road upgrade. This is so that appropriate maintenance can be carried out on these devices. TCC will arrange maintenance for all NZTA's devices on their behalf.
* Information is being prepared to send to contractors to raise awareness of issues around dewatering into the Council stormwater system and the requirement for a TCC authorisation.
* A number of buried stormwater soak holes off the edge of Papamoa Beach Road are being located, raised to ground levels and cleaned out ahead of proposed road widening works between Domain and Parton roads.
* City Care working on a stormwater pipe connected to the Tauranga Hospital advised Council of a hot water discharge .This drains to an open drain and had the potential to cause an injury. The source was traced to the hospital's boiler that is purged weekly according to their operational staff.. TCC staff will work with the hospital now to remedy this problem.
* There have been NO sewer blockages reported this week.
* Flushing of the twin siphon pipelines crossing the Kopurererua Stream from Tauriko Industrial development to the Lakes wastewater pump station is scheduled to be done on a three month cycle.
* Work to restore the stormwater ponds off Orion Way and Oteki Park Drive continues.
* The old earthenware sewer pipes in Wharf Street and Willow Street are being planned for replacement as part of the proposed roading upgrade works. Along with this road work, stormwater improvements are also being investigated including improved collection and treatment options for this area.
* During work at the Marsh Street/ Chapel Street site, Fletcher Construction reported that an unlogged stormwater pipeline had been discovered. TCC contractors City Care Ltd will CCTV inspect this pipeline to see where it goes and determine its condition, pipe type and size to update council records. This work continues.
* Open drains are presently being inspected for condition. These will be prioritised and scheduled for maintenance cleaning over the next two months.
Waiari Water Supply Project:
* Two appeals have been received against the resource consents for the construction and operation of a new water intake and treatment plant to serve the Papamoa urban growth area. Tauranga City Council will request to meet with the appellants to determine whether agreement could be reached without the need for an Environment Court hearing.
Bulk Water Meter Installation:
* Downer EDI Works has installed nine of the ten new meters. Six new meters are now operational and sending back information on SCADA. Completion is on track for September 2009.
Southern Pipeline
* Work is continuing works on the new 1,300m3 wastewater storage tank and pump station site at Maleme Street.
Inflow Reduction Project:
* Gully Trap inspections began this week in the following streets:
* Bahamas Key; 52 - 92 Beachwater Drive; Florida Key; 92 - 202 Gravatt Road; Havana Key; Malibu Key; Monaco Key; Monte Carlo Key; Monterey Key; 1 - 15 Oriental Parade; 1 - 35 & 89 - 142 Palm Beach Boulevard; 462 - 504 Papamoa Beach Road; 35 - 86 Percy Road; Piha Close; St Heliers Place; 1 - 25 Santa Barbara Drive; 1 - 43 Santa Monica Drive; Santorini Key; 2 Seychelles Drive; Sorrento Key; Stella Place. Affected property owners have been notified by letter.
City Projects
* Further work on Mauao base track will start in the next couple of weeks. The work involves filling and stabilising a constantly eroding void under the roots of a large Pohutukawa tree. The base track will remain open with a pedestrian diversion.
* The old stock fences on Mount Drury Hopukiore have been removed to make access more user friendly.
* Work to construct two kerb islands with feature trees in Kesteven Avenue is programmed to start next week. The work is part of the implementation of the Merivale Neighbourhood Plan.
* Gordon Spratt Reserve - Car park is being sealed this week.
* Options for the location and expansion of community facilities on Waitaha Reserve in Welcome Bay are being looked at in consultation with the community and key stakeholders (Welcome Bay Baptist Church, Welcome Bay Plunket, and Welcome Bay Community Centre). This project, which came out of the Ten Year Plan in June 2009, focuses on developing an integrated plan for the future provision of community facilities in this area.
Parks and Leisure
* Matua Saltmarsh walkway upgrade from Sylvania Drive onto the new boardwalk to Elms reserve is now complete. This has removed all the muddy troublesome stretches.
* McFetridge Lane access into Ohauiti Reserve upgrade is now complete.
* McLaren Falls Park – The Aims Games multi sport event to be held in the park on Wednesday.
* Daffodils are in flower.
* The new volunteers, two German and one Bolivian are settling in well.
* Mauao: The Oruahine track will be closed at times for weed control work and track maintenance.
Transportation
* Cameron Road: Routine maintenance and reconstruction work on Cameron Road between Pooles Road and Maleme Street is underway. There is a 30km speed restriction through the site so please expect delays, especially at peak times. The project is expected to take about 14 weeks to complete.
* Takitimu Drive: Routine maintenance and reconstruction of the next section of Takitimu Drive between the Elizabeth Street Roundabout and the Waihi Road off ramp is due to start this week. Lane changes will be in place so that traffic can continue to use the road while the work is being done. Night works are planned and the project is likely to take about eight weeks to complete, depending on weather. A 30km speed limit will be in place so please expect delays, particularly at peak times.
* Footpath Programme: The annual footpath construction programme has started. About 4km of new footpaths will be built between now and Christmas in various parts of the city. Most of the work is being done off road.
