Final lifeline for barking Baxta

Baxta the barking dog has been thrown one final bone with Tauranga City Council agreeing to give its Maungatapu owner 30 days to find a new home, or the dog will be put down.

Kathryn Edward's fight to keep her labrador retriever boxer cross Baxta came to a head this week at TCC's hearings panel subcommittee where she attempted to convince councillors she had done everything possible to fix the situation.

Yesterday's subcommittee, consisting of councillors Terry Molloy, Wayne Moultrie and Larry Baldock, animal services team leader Brent Lincoln, discussed the situation with Kathryn, who mentioned ‘keeping the peace' by putting Baxta down because she has no friends living out of town who can look after the dog.

But councillors have opted to give Kathryn one last chance to find Baxta a home – agreeing to delay the order for removal from the Maungatapu address for 30 days.

Council's animal services team leader Brent Lincoln says the grace period gives Kathryn an opportunity to explore the option of re-homing Baxta and council-staff will be assisting in finding a suitable address.

He admits euthanising the dog is a possibility if a new home is unobtainable.

'I guess it's a level of acceptance we had reached and it is a point where that [re-homing] was going to be the best outcome for the dog,” says Brent.

'We will be working with her to see what we can do if that [euthanising] eventuates.”

In the last year, TCC has received 14 complaints about Baxta's barking from nearby residents, who say the dog barks for more than 30 minutes at a time between midnight and 5.30am, causing disruption to their sleep.

Both an abatement notice and a notice to remove the dog under Section 55(1) of the council's Dog Control Act 1996 were sent to Kathryn's Maungatapu Road home earlier this year, which she originally objected to.

That it might have to come to putting the dog down. Our neighbours had a dog that barked ALL day - several of us complained, so they ended up getting one of those collars that "zap" the dog every time it barked. It learnt within a few days NOT to bark anymore, problem solved.

Why is everyone for treating the symptoms not the cause of the problems.
