This year's local government elections have sent a clear message to returning Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby.
He says it is crystal clear residents want change for the city, something which is evident in the election of new faces to the council.

SunLive sat down with Stuart Crosby this afternoon at his home to discuss the results.
'I am very humbled to be elected as mayor for the fourth term. Mayors don't tend to survive in big cities like this for various reasons.”
Progress results released at 3pm put Stuart ahead of the mayoral race with 10,135 votes.
Kelvin Clout has so far received 9547 votes, while Mike Baker has 3339 votes.
John Robson has 3160 votes, Richard Moore has 2776 and Hori Leaming has 757.
The voter return for this year's elections was 35.49 per cent, being 30,049 voting papers, excluding voting papers in transit to the processing centre and special votes.
Stuart says he has mixed emotions about the results.
'I am delighted to have been elected mayor for another three years but I feel sad colleagues I have worked with who have failed to get back in.”
Stuart believes there won't be much change between the results now and the preliminary ones. He says he has already started celebrating and plans to have a quiet dinner at The Mount before returning home in Papamoa.
'I will have a couple of days off before heading back to the office and getting into the swing of things.” He says next week will be about meeting the newly elected councillors he will be working with in the new triennium.
'There has been a clear message for change, which will happen.” He says he will work with the new council on changing the direction for the city.
Stuart officially assumed office on October 9, 2004 and has been re-elected to mayor and has served two terms.

kicking and screaming, he has no choice.
Huge change, but let's hope they deliver

Now the hard part starts. Two intelligent women have been elected but they somehow have to work with the rest including the survivors who don't exactly impress me.

Who may, with a bit of luck, now have a team that can work together.
Best wishes to new Council

Great expectations & hopefully will herald good changes for the future vision of Tauranga & the BOP to make it more family and business friendly (& get us out of the $10 Tauranga mould). Thanks also to all the departing councillors, especially those who have served the City faithfully for many years as it can be a very thankless task.

Two, I believe out of the existing Councillors left, that to me is very much a wake up call to all. For the next three years we want to see Tauranga grow, not necessarily spend, but grow. We have a vibrant city that needs to be recognised by all. To those who succeeded congratulations, remember however you represent the voters of Tauranga and to listen to them. The same to Stuart listen and discuss. No bully tactics needed. To those who lost, and some should still be there, commiserations.
Let's see then..........

Re-elected for the fourth term?..look at the state we are in...ok then, so you are re-elected, if you think you had wished for change, then this would have been evident in the first three terms surely!...back in the trough eh..!!
Congratulations

A lesson for new councillors may be to approach everything without a fixed mindset or agenda, be consistent about policy, and don't keep blowing your own trumpet.

Congrats all successful candidates, it was fun to meet up with you "on the road". Speak out, and pull together more often than you pull apart. Good luck steering this great little City.

It was my understanding too, that hoardings had to be removed by midnight before election day, but I saw 4 different candidate's hoardings on display at 11.30 on Sat morning.
The new and old broom

Words are cheap Mr Crosby. You have new brooms to help with the clean up. I do, however, believe that these new brooms have a lot of dirt to shift, with many constraints.
Promising New Change(2)
Posted on 13-10-2013 11:50 | By nerak
'Big investment they had made over the last decade”. Yes, and very quietly some of it was done, too (land banking comes to mind, many ratepayers unaware this had happened). 'New council I think will take a fresh approach”. You think??? 'I have this 100 day plan”. Not any more, you don't. You are now forced to rethink. 'Most important issue is creating environment where people feel they are heard”. Hasn't worked in the last 10 years, has it? Now, it surely will! 'Tga city is ready to move forward in a big way”. That will be a great change from moving backward, which it's done for too many years. One of the biggest tip outs in the country, Stuart, must be telling you something? Someone commented elsewhere on this site that we have a vibrant city. We used to, maybe we have a chance at the description again.

Papamoa Pressure
Posted on 13-10-2013 15:18 | By Papaknowa
No doubting that a total sweep out of Mount and Papamoa Councillors was anticipated by the residents of Papamoa. Perhaps now we will be given some attention and that matters central to residents' concerns will be taken seriously.
Lucky Man
Posted on 13-10-2013 15:50 | By Jitter
Stuart Crosby is lucky Gail McIntosh did not stand for mayor or he would have been slaughtered. The writing is on the wall Stuart. You had better start keeping your promises. You should also start having regular face to face consultations with all ratepayer groups not just local iwi. There are other people in the BOP to consult. Reduce debt by selling off Baywave, the Stadium, all council buildings etc,and lease them back if necessary as do many govt departments and corporates. That should reduce the TCC debt mountain a little. Reduce TCC staff numbers by at least 50%. There are a number of new councillors who would support this reduction of ridiculous amount spent on unneccessary slaries. Overpaid and underworked.

HOPEFULLY

Hopefully the one lady councillor that always voted against 99% of decisions will now start to be more constructive.
New for old?
Posted on 14-10-2013 12:18 | By Aster
Dippie has a good point. What bothers me is the fact that the three surviving councillors do not have a good track record as far as supporting positive events and facilities that will ensure Tauranga city moves forward. My guess is that at least two of the three will quickly align themselves with some of the new team who will aim to 'slash and burn'also. Hope that I am wrong, but look at how many of the newly elected talked about cutting the City's debt, in their electioneering. Terry Malloy will be missed, as an advocate for the Arts, and for his precious suburb of Greerton.
Still
Posted on 17-10-2013 23:30 | By Capt_Kaveman
goes to show by the vote counts there are many still in support of the old Councillors, but the 3 lower rank candidates at large with 6,800odd votes really shifted on who the lower 2 places went to since there was only 1,300 votes separating the other six, im skeptic over this group of 3 which includes Gail as this is similar as the pick 6 were to start with but time will tell

Southmark comments, "It was my understanding too, that hoardings had to be removed by midnight before election day, but I saw 4 different candidate's hoardings on display at 11.30 on Sat morning." ... Signs were to be removed within 24 hours following the result day, midnight Sunday.
