Health officials are looking at adding flouride to water supplies in Murupara, Edgecumbe and Taneatua after voters supported retaining flouride in Whakatane and Ohope on Saturday.
'These communities have so much to gain from the benefits of water fluoridation,” says Dr Rudi Johnson, Principal Dentist for the Bay of Plenty DHB.
'We look forward to working with the council and communities on the next steps needed to consider extending fluoridation to water supplies outside of Whakatane and Ohope.”
Saturday's referendum result was 6297 in favour of Whakatane continuing water flouridation, against 4120 who opposed it. There were three informal votes and 419 blank voting papers.
'I am delighted with the outcomes,” says Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health Dr Neil de Wet.
'This has been an important opportunity for voters to have their say on water fluoridation and the level of community support should be commended.
'The majority in favour sends a clear message that the Whakatane District communities want water fluoridation.”
Water fluoridation was first introduced for Whakatane more than 40 years ago. This is the third referendum on the issue and all three have been consistently in favour of fluoridated water.

Good to know that a strident group of non-resident activists hasn't managed to derail the oral healthcare of local people.

Can just hope that it will not be too long before we get fluoride added in to our local water again. Product is clearly not poisonous if taken in the correctly diluted form. Try living on only WATER to find that this is also poisonous if taken in excess of the requirements of the human body. Pity that there are so many extremist bigots in our midst.
Questionable motives

Parents should know fluoride is a neurotoxin and that the dosage at which it acts as a neurotoxin is not known. They should know it affects the thyroid gland at low doses and accumulates in the pineal gland. The acknowledgement that fluoride is a neurotoxin is important for more than just IQ averages. Potentially curtailing a child's potential intelligence for the sake of their teeth when fluoride is not necessary for the body and when cavities can be prevented by diet and oral hygiene habits is not something the government should decide for people. It's really not even something your neighbors should decide for your family. Take a pill if you want more fluoride than you already get from food and toothpaste don't dose the water. Water is far too pervasive a vehicle and leads to more fluoride in food, beer, wine, soil, groundwater, and waterways.
Stop and think

When making decisions for you and family do you research it or blindly go along with what you are told. Suggest with issue of hydrofluorosilicic Acid you do research other than from MOH websites or NZ Dental Assn. They neglect to tell you that you don't have to swallow this stuff, topical application works directly on teeth When brushing. Both views have presented the same conclusion .. So why is there such a push to dump fluoride into our water, is it because industry can't dump it any other way?
Conspiracy theorists abound

Water, salt and caffeine can also be fatal. But in the quantities that people typically consume them, they can be enjoyable and even beneficial. Please research the topic before scaremongering.
