A fresh start is the consensus among the newly elected councillors following a two day workshop this week.
The elected members have committed to creating a positive, collaborative and respectful culture at Tauranga City Council, with a strong desire for Council to reconnect with its community, says Mayor Stuart Crosby today.
The group of seven new Tauranga City Councillors elected in this year's local body elections on October 12.
"What has already emerged from our time together as a new elected member group is that this really is a fresh start,” says Stuart.
'The group is passionate about applying new and innovative thinking to council issues and providing strong leadership for the city.”
The elected members as a group want to convey the constructive nature of the two-day workshop and a commitment to drawing on the diversity of skills and experience to make positive changes for the city, reports council.
Stuart says issues discussed at the workshop include the elected members' aspirations for the city; key issues facing Tauranga in the next three-30 years; roles and responsibilities for councillors; delegations and committee structures; and appointments to various committees, groups and panels.
The workshop is one of the first steps in an orientation programme for the new council. It includes input from a number of community organisations and city leaders. It also involves visits to key council and city facilities, businesses, and places of interest like future growth areas.
The workshop was led by the City Mayor and included members of the Council's executive leadership team.
The new council will be sworn in at the inaugural Council meeting next Wednesday.

First issue is whatever they do, is it affordable? Is it needed right now?
Wouldn't it be nice

To hear the concillors speak for themselves instead of hearing from our current Caretaker Mr Crosby. Telling us all about what the the council intends to do. They haven't met yet and it''l be interesting to whether one of the higher polling councillors gets the Deputy's job or is there another potential "David Stewart" job in the wings? I'd also like to know if any action is being considered against the candidates who still had election hoardings up on the Sunday after the election?
And are

What a positive, forward-looking report from Stuart. Let's hope this can be followed up by a few more positive comments from the anonymous curmudgeons who have been so negative in the past on these postings right here. I challenge people who place comments to use their real names: have the guts to be recognised if you have a gripe

It is time that Mayor Crosby realised that he is not the only member of the TCC who has a voice. Isn't it about time we heard directly from councillors instead of everything being relayed through Crosby ?
Must be better than the torpid trifecta

Reading the skills of the newly elected councillors it's my opinion that they are going to be better than the three councillors that managed to hang on. Important to give them a chance, but it certainly will be a challenge to keep rates within inflation, not increase debt and still fulfill some of the promises.
wow

so much said but this says very little all talk now lets do, i think their maybe a few good new faces but Tauranga has had many like this before and ended up in the rubbish we are in, time will tell but i cannot believe the amount of votes that many still got from the old members

Take a long hard look at Council funded organisations and initiatives and ascertain whether or not they are productive and/or needed. Start with Priority One.
