Arataki Community Hall revisited

The group set up to help represent the Arataki community and provide input into the development of a new community centre in Arataki is meeting today to discuss what the community centre might look like, the types of activities that could take place, and the final location of the community centre on Grenada Park. This will help inform the Tauranga City Council project team who are working on pulling together a brief for the development and design of the building for early 2010.

This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin, published below.

Water Supply:

  • Otumoetai Road residents were affected by a shutdown on Tuesday 1st December. This water shutdown went ahead without the formal notification being sent out to residents affected. A mix up in communication within the Maintenance Contractors, City Care, resulted in this occurring. There will also be another shutdown affecting the same area next week we are still awaiting the confirmed date for this. The work being carried out on Otumoetai Road should be complete by the end of next week.
  • Otumoetai Watermain Upgrade - Pipe being thrust in Goods Road from Pillans Road to Milton Road. Pipe laying in Waihi Road and Otumoetai Road intersection and connecting up in Otumoetai.
  • Fire hydrant marking and servicing continues in the Greerton and Ohauiti area and throughout the city over the coming year.
  • Work on the Ohauiti High Level water supply reservoir is progressing, expected to be completed late January 2010.
  • Water main replacement in Apollo Street and a section of Cameron between Elizabeth Street and Spring Street are due to commence this month. Pamela Place and Hillcrest are programmed for the next two months.
  • Drilling has begun on the water main upgrades at Eight Avenue and work should be completed by the 18th of December.
  • The replacement of a pressure reducing valve and installation of a bulk meter is currently underway on Poike Road and should be complete mid December.
  • A trial on the Oropi booster pumps is to be done on Thursday, this is a backup system which in the event of not having the supply from the Joyce Road Treatment Plant that we will be able to meet our service requirements in those areas normally fed from the Joyce Road system.

Drainage:

  • Carlton Reserve Pond, Meadowland Pond (Matua salt marsh area), and two upper ponds in Carmichael Reserve are now scheduled for cleaning to remove a quantity of raupo and other weed growth choking up the sites.
  • There is a damaged flood flap gate on stormwater outlet into the harbour along with some local ground subsidence at end of Cross Road (outside Sandford's) that requires investigation and fixing. We will also investigate the need to continue to have the flap gate in service.
  • The open drains within Omanu Golf Course and in the vicinity of Bruce Road on SH2 are scheduled for weed growth cleaning.
  • In Smiths Road near Eaton Crescent some minor stormwater improvement work to the system is scheduled for next week to help with a local flooding issue, along with a new street sump to be installed in Takapu Street.
  • Some unscheduled sewer pipeline replacement work at Bakels processing plant off Te Maire Street is being investigated and designed in consultation with site development works that Bakels are proposing to do within their yard.
  • Three sewer blockages were reported this week, none caused an overflow as were confined to a local area. The blockage locations were: Harris Street, again in the area of the Bayfair shopping complex, but in a different location to previous incidents; Bell Street where a pipeline fat blockage was reported and cleared; Glenlyon Avenue a pipeline blockage was identified following a customer's report that their toilet was not working properly. This is a site of repeat incidences so further investigation of CCTV inspection of the pipelines is being done to see if a cause can be identified.
  • There were no pollution incidents reported this week.

Water Demand Management:

  • A pressure management pilot project is being planned for the Poike area to reduce night flow water losses. The project comprises the upgrading of pressure control devices and piloting of flow modulating pressure control devices. Pressures and losses will be carefully monitored during December and January and adjustments made as necessary.

Waiari Water Supply Project:

  • Three appeals have been received against the resource consents for the construction and operation of a new water intake and treatment plant to serve the Papamoa urban growth area. Tauranga City Council is in discussions with the appellants and parties must report progress to the Environment Court by 26 February 2010.

Bulk Water Meter Installation:

  • A bulk meter renewal project is being scheduled to start in December and will continue into February next year. Approximately 11 bulk meters are being renewed for accuracy of waterbalance and improved demand management.

Southern Pipeline:

  • Work is continuing on the new 1,300m3 wastewater storage tank and pump station site at Maleme Street with excavation of the tank completed and the lining of the tank progressing.
  • Work on extending the existing sewer in Maleme Street from the stormwater drain to the new pump station site has started and is expected to be completed prior to Christmas. At times the road will be down to one lane controlled by Stop/Go boards and there will be restrictions to On-Road parking.
  • The first section of pipeline being between Maleme and Memorial is programmed to start in the middle of 2010.
  • Work is starting on detailed investigation for the Judea Link emergency management option.

Inflow Reduction Project:

  • Inspections in the Bethlehem triangle area between Cambridge Road, Moffat Road and SH2 will begin in late January 2010. Affected customers will receive a letter advising this before inspections begin.

  • Cameron Road: The bulk of the work has been completed. There is still some minor finishing off to be done. Traffic management and temporary speed limits will still be in place so please take care when driving through the site.
  • Takitimu Drive: Work on Takitimu Drive continues on both north bound and south bound lanes between the Waihi Road overbridge and Chapel Street. Lane changes and a 30km speed limit are in place so please expect delays, particularly at peak times.
  • Chadwick Road Resealing: Resealing work on Chadwick Road between Mansels Road and Fraser Street scheduled for last week has been postponed until 8 December due to bad weather. The work should only take a couple of hours to complete. There will be minor disruption to traffic
