$26.7m for TISEC contract

Tauranga's new indoor sports and exhibition centre at Baypark will cost $26,743,950 to build.
Tauranga City Council project manager City Engineer, Howard Severinsen, has announced this contract price with Hawkins Construction Limited to do the work.
The price indicates that the entire project could be delivered for $39 million – that's $2m under the $41m budget, says Howard.

Baypark, the site for the new indoor sports and exhibition centre.

The remaining $12m is spent on the access road, services including power, sewerage and water, design, professional services, staff time, internal fit out and related costs.
Negotiations with Hawkins have been taking place since late November when Hawkins was announced as the preferred contractor. The process has seen some modifications to the way the centre will be constructed, though the original design remains unchanged, says Howard.
Construction is expected to begin next month, with completion scheduled for mid 2011.
Mayor Stuart Crosby says TISEC is ‘the right project at the right time' for the city and will provide huge community benefit.
'With nine courts and associated amenities, TISEC will give a real boost to community sport and enhance the city's ability to provide for events and entertainment,” says Stuart.
The price represents good value for money, says Stuart.
'Given the competitive construction market there won't be a better time to build this facility. We believe that Tauranga City Council and Hawkins have put together a quality framework for moving forward on this project and we look forward to construction beginning.”
Sport Bay of Plenty Chief Executive, Wayne Werder, says the sporting community is in desperate need of better indoor space and the sporting codes have been working for many years to get this project off the ground.
'The indoor sport and exhibition centre will go a long way to assisting us all to offer more opportunities, particularly for children, to be more active and reap the wider benefits that involvement in sport provides,” says Wayne.
The nine court TISEC is intended to become a hub for community sport and entertainment – supporting the greater western Bay of Plenty. TISEC is intended to cater primarily for community sport – then exhibitions and other functions such as sports events, awards and corporate events. The centre includes a stage area, has seating for 3000 people, meeting rooms, a kitchen and other amenities.
