More than $600,000 has been give to city projects aimed at helping the poor and to house the old.
The Tauranga City Council is tasked with administering the trust deeds of the Stewart and Curruthers Trusts, and distributing the income.
The Stewart Trust is to be used for the relief of poverty, the Carruthers Trust for providing essential maintenance of housing for the elderly.
The Stewart Trust's biggest beneficiary this year Homes of Hope with a $400,000 grant for reimbursement of costs for a home for vulnerable children. The money is to be used to retire debt, not for buying more houses.
The Tauranga Community Foodbank received $10,000.
In response to an application from Tauranga Safe City for $500,000 to set up a night shelter and day care centre for homeless people, the committee set aside $118,000 in the kitty to be allocated in future once the proposals have firmed up a bit.
The city council itself received $47,000 from the Carruthers Trust to install entry level bathrooms into its elderly housing units.
The trust deed stipulates the council committee that makes the decisions on distribution, favour organisations rather than individuals.
