Council clean-up stumps resident

A Pillans Point resident is calling Tauranga City Council's removal of a number of unsafe trees from a nearby walkway an 'absolute disgrace”.

Council contracted arborists have been working their way along McArdles Bush walkway, between Goods Road and Coach Drive in Otumoetai, clearing trees and scrub in an attempt to make the walkway safer.

The walkway after.

The walkway has been intermittedly closed between 9am and 4pm for the last two weeks, while arborists remove trees and bush with a chipper, mulcher and bobcat – something resident Kathy Fathers believes is a path of destruction.

'People I have talked to just can't believe it is being done. They just had a big bulldozer that just took everything down on the side of the track,” says Kathy.

'Why can't they just go through with chainsaws and not get rid of everything?”

Tauranga City Council arborist Richard Conning says the work is part of dual purpose operation to ensure public safety and tidy up the area. He says a number of trees have fallen across the walkway posing a potential threat to walkers in the last few months.

'They keep falling over and there were large logs left over from previous falls. So we are going to get it all out and then clear the track for public safety and to tidy it up,” says Richard.

'We have taken out primarily weeds and trees; large ones that have a long history of falling over across the track. The main ones are Robinia and Lombardy poplar.”

After the operation, council will be maintaining ongoing weed control before planting native trees and shrubs in the area vacated by the large trees.

But Kathy remains concerned with what she believes is a heavy handed approach to tree removal.

'It was a beautiful bush walk that you could walk through listening to the Tuis. I'm very annoyed as it was one of my favourites; and now it's just an eye sore,” says Kathy.

'The council have been in there with a bulldozer and it's an absolute disgrace. I guess they are the so called experts; they always have a logical answer for everything.”

Hardly...

...a tidy up. More like a total butchering and desecration of the environment. Have the so-called 'knowledgeable arborists" (including council officers), not heard of the word 'selective?' I certainly would not allow them near my place!

Lumberjacks?

A dictionary definition of arborist is "tree surgeon". Judging by the picture above, and the apparent use of a bulldozer, there is nothing surgical in what council arborists have done here.

Bushwalk

I cant believe council has allowed such destruction to what was a beautiful walk! They say it is for safety reasons but hello they got rid of all the soft fauna that wouldn't hurt a fly and left larger trees that could be a Danger. They have exposed the path to sunlight where it used to be a nice walk in the shade so now you can get sun-burnt and to top it all off they charged a local resident $40000 recently for destruction who is accountable for this mess?

I would think that the "Arborists?" would be better employed in beach cleaning;-there's nothing left. Or are they moonlighting in the firewood business?

AND THEY TRIED TO TAKE SOME TO COURT FOR CUTTING A BRANCH

What a mess, many people are now unable to go into the bush to see what the under growth is like and the destruction that has gone on here is unbelievable. If the firm was contracted to do the work, what were the parameters and if they have overstepped no more work for TCC. These so called arborists should be hanging heads in shame. Training for aborists should include bush walks in natural forests and make them understand that undergrowth rotting is natural feeding of the trees, yes cut back logs over paths but leave the other part to decay and feed the area. Shame on those involved. Expect more plants to die because of the light and heat.

Tree hackers

Looks a lot worse than the job done on the Motel tree where TCC issued a "hackers" notice. I can not see the sense of this all out destruction, trees grow, trees fall over ... it happens, the track was wide clear and safe before but not now.

Consultation ?

Again TCC has not consulted with the residents/ratepayers. Surely this work should have been discussed with them before the so called "arborists" went in and did such a highly skilled job with a bulldozer. TCC and their staff just don't seem to learn from past balls ups. The staff are obviously bloody clueless and don't seem to realise that the residents/ratepayers pay their over the top salaries and these people must be consulted before a job like this is planned let alone carried out. I am quite surprised that the local iwi were not consulted as these are the only group that TCC and staff consult on a regular and confidential basis. It is time TCC and staff realised that residents/ratepayers must be involved in all future planning and decision making if they want to keep their jobs.

Sheer Vandalism!!!!

No too long ago a local resident was fined $48,000.00 for cutting down a handful of trees that weren't even visible to the public from the walking track! Sack these so called 'Aborists' they are a bunch of cow-boys! It is criminal what has been done to a once beautiful green walkway.
