Water issues after pipe break

Discoloured water affecting Greerton, Gate Pa, Merivale and the Avenues can be removed by running an outside tap for five to ten minutes, the city council advises.

A water pipe break in Maleme Street Thursday afternoon created the discoloured water problem for the area between Greerton to around 11th Avenue.

The pipe was repaired last night, and contractors were doing additional mains flushing of hydrants along Cameron Road and Fraser Street last night to speed up the process of clearing the discoloured water from the mains.

'Although it is disconcerting, the colour is not harmful,” says council communications advisor Marcel Currin.

'It's a build-up of natural minerals that are already in the water, which collect over time on the pipes and are dislodged in the event of sudden pressure.”

People who have issues with water quality are advised to call the city council on 577 7000.

It is rust in the pipes that has caused this discoloration, running my outside tap did not work last night so had a lovely guy from Downer come and flush the main tap outside of my property at 11.30pm last night, awesome service,am peed as refilled my pool and now it is discolored, grrr..Thanks to the cable company who were drilling and failed to see where a pipe was before they started drilling,,
