Dry weather prompts water call

Tauranga residents are being urged to be thoughtful when it comes to water usage as dry weather and increased visitor numbers have led to a rise in consumption.

Tauranga City Council communications advisor Marcel Currin says there is no formal request from TCC to conserve but it wouldn't hurt for people to be thoughtful with usage.

'Tauranga City's water consumption is slightly above average for this time of the year,” says Marcel.

'But that's to be expected over summer when you take into account the dry weather, increased visitor use, three cruise ships and the jetsprint event on Saturday.”

He says council contractors may have been seen dumping water on the ground near the Queen Elizabeth II Centre at Memorial Park earlier today, but this was part of necessary repairs.

'The flushing was a necessary part of repairs to the drinking water supply network.

'A fault at or near the QEII Centre meant a water pipe needed to be shut down while repairs were made.”

There is no current water restrictions in place.

The current fire conditions in the region are high at the moment – one step away from extreme.
