Pipes ready for floating

The final sections of a multi-million dollar wastewater pipeline project are being laid out along State Highway 29 ready to be floated across the Tauranga Harbour.

Tauranga City Council's latest update reports the 700 metre length of pipe as part of the Southern Pipeline project has been welded together and is currently being laid out on the highway at Matapihi.

Pipe laid out for the Southern Pipeline project.

The pipe is part of the Judea Link project that will connect the wastewater system between Judea and Memorial Park.

TCC expects, weather depending, the pipe will be floated across to Memorial Park in the next two weeks.

It will then be pulled through the tunnel that has been drilled between Memorial park and Graham Park.

The Southern Pipeline is a sewage project that will transfer wastewater from Tauriko through to the Te Maunga Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mount Maunganui. It is required to relieve pressure on the current wastewater system, especially the existing Judea to Chapel Street trunk main.

TCC reports the current cost on their website as $102.4million and is expected to be completed by 2016.
