'This is a half-hearted approach and not what was expected of them – have they no respect for the New Zealand environment,” says Winston.
'We want every last scrap of the Rena, innards and all, off our coast.”

The containership Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef, about 25km off the coast of Tauranga, on October 5, 2011. The ship leaked more than 350 tonnes of heavy fuel oil into the environment and broke up, spilling containers and cargo into the ocean, washing up on beaches across the Bay of Plenty.
Parts of the wreck have been removed with the bow section cut to one metre below the high tide, while the sunken aft section remains underwater on the reef.
In a day-long visit to Tauranga to speak to the party's faithful ahead of the 2014 general election, Winston is adamant the Rena needs to be completely removed. He says it is unacceptable for the owners and insurers to attempt to leave the broken up wreck in an 'environmentally benign state”.
'They suggest that removing more of the wreck is too challenging and too technical, this looks like they are taking the easy option and dumping the remains on New Zealand.
'It must go. The Rena was one of our worst shipping disasters and threatened to permanently damage our coastline and affect all the marine species that thrive in our waters.”
When questioned about any knowledge of Ngai Te Hapu representative Buddy Mikaere's allegations of secret deals between the Government and the owners and insurers, the MP confirms he is aware of the allegations and says they are 'alarming”.
In January, Buddy told SunLive iwi hope to have their claim for full removal resolved by March, but things are stalling due to what he alleges are documents between the Government and Rena owners and insurers being kept confidential.
The iwi's claim seeks to recommend the Government enforce the removal notice issued by Maritime New Zealand to the owners of the Rena in October 2011.
In the course of preparing for the claim, Buddy says iwi found out about three confidential agreements signed between the Crown and the owners.
'I can't prove that, but it's an alarming allegation,” says Winston.
'I know Mr Mikaere and he's not the kind of person to say these things if he didn't have some evidence to back them up.”
Winston says to do anything less than total removal sends a signal to the world's maritime community that New Zealand is a pushover and readily accepts lower standards than the rest of the world.
And with one of the most pristine coastlines in the world, it is evident after the hundreds of hours spent by volunteers to clear the mess, that Kiwis want the wreck gone, he says.
Tauranga – 2014 election
Heading into this year's general election, Winston is confident there is going to be a NZ First candidate to contest the Tauranga seat alongside National's Simon Bridges and Labour's Dr Rachel Jones – and independent MP Brendan Horan.
But he will not be drawn on any rumours or speculation surrounding the identity of the candidate, stating he has 'no personal information” on the topic, but the party is not going down without a fight.
'There's a lot to shoot for here in the next few months in this campaign and we are going to be campaigning seriously hard here,” says Winston
'Brendan Horan hasn't got a hope in Hades in the Tauranga seat so he's not the one we are worrying about. You have got to ask why one of the most exciting cities in the country is down in the bottom half of the earning ratio of this country.”

Delighted to see a politician concerned with the greater good of Tauranga voice the belief that the Rena must go. Tauranga voters should be begging Winston to stand here again himself - at the very least we would then have a member who serves his electorate rather than his political masters.
Hypocritical

Buddy Mikaere is being very selective when he says the Government and the owners of the Rena have come to a secret agreement over it's removal. He is obviously very conveniently forgetting about all the secret agreements Maori have made with various governments over the years on which the general public have had no input until it is too late. Surely he doesn't expect government to consult Maori on every decision it makes ? Winston Peters is touting for votes so is prepared to say anything to pull them in. I think he would find that there are as many people who want to leave the remains of the Rena where it is as those demanding that the whole thing be removed.
wrecks everywhere

Im not sure if its better to leave it or take it away, both sides seem to have valid points, but the scare-mongering comments of Winston are just political pleasers aned by trying to make NZers out as stupid is just nasty. Out and around the waters of NZ and the world there are loads of wrecks around, so is he saying all these counties are losers and stupid too or does he just think we are??? Horan is also a loser now that he is not representing NZ first, oh dear Winston stop treating people like morons

Nice to have you on board Winston - of course the damned thing should go - lets hope John key has the balls to hold out for total removal and not be blackmailed with some paltry sum into allowing the big boys to let it remain in 'our' territory!

Get rid of it by all means .I know someone who is in the salvage operation of this wreck and he says there is still oil in the Rena. How would anyone catching fish in the area know if the fish are contaminated and for how many years would it continue to leak out of the ship. In England they still have oil on their beaches washing up from World War 2!

Come on people be realistic Rena is here to stay, the technical difficulties involved are formidable and "aint no one gonna be fishing that reef for 10 plus years". There already has been 2 incidents of divers getting bent, and they are working to there limits at the moment. Are you saying that it has to go no matter the cost! does that cost include human life!!! Yes there is still a very small amount of oil left on her, but lets not forget the wreck at the Poor Knights (sorry name escapes me) that has 1000 ton of oil on her which and can be seen on a flat day leeching out. So when that particular vessel collapses and spews her oil over the Poor Knights it will be a much worse disaster than anything Rena did.

Seems to me, some comments are coming from people who want the wreck left where it is?? Are these people on someone's payroll? Its great to see Winston on the job... Get the Rena !off the reef!

We don't seem to well informed about today's modern technology's in this part of the world but I believe there i a Dutch marine salvage company that can lift the Rena wreck up of the bottom and move it into shallow water were it can be cut up for scrap without any trouble except for the cost which the insurers have come up with!
