Base track walk most popular

The walk round the Mauao base track remains the most popular in the city, although fewer people are making the effort to walk to the top.

According to Tauranga City Council draft annual report figures being recommended for approval this week during the financial year ending June 30, 2014 there were 1,087,618 people who walked – or ran – round the base track.

In the 2013 year there were 1,069,539. It's the second year in succession that more than one million people have walked round the Mount.

By comparison those who took the effort to walk to the 232m high summit are a select few, only numbering 154,630. A number that's decreasing. In the 2013 year there were 158,588 people who walked to the top.

Two other city walks have increased traffic during last year, according to TCC figures.

The number of people who walked the Waikareao walkway, and round the Carmichael reserve were also down, but Daisy Hardwick walkway was closed for a period while capital works were undertaken on the sea wall; and the counter at the Waikareao was vandalised.

There were 108,426 people who took the walk in 2014, compared with 133,262 in 2013. Carmichael Reserve walkers were 64,594 in 2014, and 77,352 in 2013.

All are looking great. Keep an eye on developments in the Kopurereua Valley. A link from Birch Ave to The Lakes is now open and getting better each month. Well done TCC

Can someone please tell me who is counting the people walking in these beautiful places? Just how these figures have been arrived at? I'm curious.

it's a great walk but why on earth haven't the council put signs up like they do on a lot popular walking tracks here and Aussie "walk on the left hand side" it's so simple.

Answer to Big Ted. There are counters positioned at the gates at the end of the Surf Club Boardwalk as you enter the Base Track & also the gate through the Campground. Next time round take a second to have a look.
