Thames Coromandel District Council will look to adopt a revised draft of the Freedom Camping Bylaw at its upcoming meeting in October.
This week the council deliberated on more than 120 submissions for the draft which has been out for public consultation for the last few months.
TCDC will look to adopt a revised of the Freedom Camping Bylaw.
The changes come after a judicial review sought by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association of council's current Freedom Camping Bylaw.
Proposed changes include removing limitations on freedom camping in restricted areas during summer and holiday weekends, and extending departure times from 8am to 9am.
The number of nights people can stay in restricted areas would also be raised to two consecutively, and specific sites would also be designated for freedom camping within restricted areas.
There would also be changes to proposed areas where freedom camping is prohibited or restricted.
Last month's High Court decision found the bylaw is legal but two clauses in the Public Places Bylaw and Parking Control Bylaw should be revoked, which council has formally done this week.
Chief executive David Hammond says during legal proceedings council were already reviewing the bylaw to make it 'more permissive, and revoking the two inconsistent bylaw clauses”.
"We are wanting to work more proactively with the NZMCA to ensure that people visiting the Coromandel in certified self-contained vehicles are catered for and are considerate of our beautiful Coromandel environment.
'People in uncertified non self-contained vehicles will be encouraged to use commercial campsites."
Council has agreed to keep the proposed district-wide restriction that all freedom campers must be certified self-contained.
They will work on signage and develop easy to use information for the public on the freedom camping rules and also places where freedom camping is encouraged.
Once ready the information will be available in council's area offices, i-Sites and visitor centres, as well as their website.
