Tree submissions sought

Tauranga city council is seeking public opinions on tree management changes that will include a plant allergy scale and an annual pollen calendar.

Tree issues can cause debate.

The allergy scale and a pollen calendar are introduced to provide more consistent measures to assess tree issues, and more consideration of social well-being – striking a balance between the public benefit and amenity of trees and the negative impacts, says council strategic planner Emlyn Hatch.

The changes also aim to make the policy more consistent and pragmatic, and provide greater flexibility around decision making.

'We know that trees are vital to our city but there are times when trees can have a negative impact on people and their wellbeing,” SAYS Emlyn. 'The proposed changes to the Vegetation and Tree Management Policy reflect this.

'Our city arborists resolve 99 percent of issues and suggestions relating to trees but there is a handful each year that require further consideration. The draft policy allows a more flexible decision-making process, with a more balanced approach to trees and vegetation.”

Submission forms will be available from Council's website www.tauranga.govt.nz/haveyoursay Council offices and Tauranga City Libraries from Monday 6 October. Drop in sessions will be held at the Council Chambers on Tuesday 28 October and Thursday 30 October from 5pm to 6.30pm.

The policy covers all trees on Council-owned or administered land, including parks, reserves and roadsides. The proposed changes to the Vegetation and Tree Management Policy do not affect Notable trees, which are covered in the City Plan.
