A Waka Kotahi spokesperson says access to highways impacted by slips and fallen trees have been improved in "most areas" in the eastern Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

While some roads have reopened, the Waka Kotahi spokesperson says the situation can "change at any time so expect the unexpected".

"Be aware that the weather has also caused potholes to form around the region.

"Check your speed and watch following distances."

Update to affected areas are as follows:

  • SH2 Awakeri – OPEN
  • SH2 Waimana Gorge – OPEN
  • SH2 Waioeka Gorge – OPEN
  • SH2 Waiotahe Beach – OPEN
  • SH5 Tumunui – OPEN TO ONE LANE ONLY - a slip is still partially blocking a section of SH5 south of Tumunui and stop/go traffic management is in place.
  • SH30 Rotoma –. OPEN
  • SH35 -  CLOSED between Hawaii and Omaio due to multiple slips.

"Waka Kotahi thanks road users for their patience."

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
