State Highway 2 at Matawai is closed after a tree fell, blocking the road.

"The road is now closed between Te Wera Road and the Matawai township," says a Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"An arborist will be onsite shortly to assess the damage and to determine next steps.

"Please keep checking our interactive Journey Planner website for the information on when the road will reopen.

"Heavy rainfall in the area saw surface flooding near Otoko Hill yesterday but the flooding dissipated and the road reopened last night."
