Katikati Concert Band wants the community to know that they are hosting an end-of-year concert this month.
Band president Karen Goh said the concert will be held on October 25, from 4pm, at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church on Mulgan St.
Goh said the band has more than 15 members, aged from 14 to about 70, who play a range of instruments. “We are a concert band – which means we’ve got all instruments at our disposal except string instruments.
“We’ve got woodwinds – flutes, clarinets, saxes; the brasses – trumpets, trombones, tubas – and we have the percussion instruments but we don’t have the violins, the cellos or the double basses. If you have strings, you become an orchestra.”
The October 25 concert will be performed under the baton of Hiro Kobayashi, Goh said.
“We will perform classical favourites from Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Holst and Gershwin, to modern ‘classics’, from Les Miserables, Deep Purple and Queen.”
She invited the Western Bay of Plenty community to come along and enjoy the likes of Hungarian Dance No.5, Morning, In the Hall of the Mountain King, March from The Nutcracker and the quirky Walking the Dog.
“For a quieter moment, we will play the traditional Māori lullaby Hine e hine which many of you will recognise from ‘Goodnight Kiwi’ which used to signal the end of TVNZ’s broadcast for the day in the 1980s-1990s.”
Goh said a selection of raffles will be drawn at the concert’s closing to help the band fundraise for its ongoing costs of performing and rehearsal room hire. “So grab your tickets on the day – they will cost $2 each or three for $5 – and be in the draws to win.”
The Katikati Concert Band’s end of year concert is on October 25, from 4pm at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church on Mulgan St. The concert will start 4pm, doors open 3.30pm. Tickets cost $10 each on the door or from The Arts Junction – or purchase tickets online at: www.theartsjunction.org.nz. Children aged under 12 free.
