Motorists are experiencing long delays between Tauranga and Katikati today due to maintenance work on State Highway 2.

A caller to SunLive reported a delay of 30 minutes around 11am while travelling north on SH2 to Katikati.

“It’s the worst. It’s just not moving,” the SunLive reader said.

“It’s both ways, stopped still. It’s literally been half an hour and I’m going north, just waiting in the queue.

“I’ve been sitting here 30 minutes, and there must be a massive tail behind me. They’ve just started moving now, but they didn’t let anyone through whatsoever for 30 minutes. It’s really jammed for miles behind me.”

NZTA Waka Kotahi have advised there is maintenance work being carried out this weekend on SH2 between Hot Springs Rd and Tetley Rd.

“Due to tree works and drainage on Saturday 8 November and Sunday 9 November there will be Stop/Stop and Stop/Go operations in place from 7am to 7pm with 30kph temporary speed restrictions in place,” NZTA said.

“Please drive with care and expect minor delays.”

NZTA the problem!

They just seem to have this arrogant entitlement to close roads with no thought of minimising the disruption to the public. It's a pleasure to drive overseas where road workers are more efficient and less disruptive.

Their 'minor' delay is 1/2 hour, but multiply that by the number of vehicles and this is a major road closure.

Its been like this for at least 2 years now, in different stretches of the road. It will take waka kohtahi 100 years to complete their work at current pace.

I was coming from Katikati side after along drive and complete stop for 25 minutes. So traffic banked both sides of the tree work . I used to work for a power company and we often did shutdowns to work at 1 am onwards so disruption was less

Appalling Traffic Management

We were stuck in this, around 11.30am, stationary for 30 minutes. Absolutely appalling traffic management. Zero consideration for the general population. I understand the need to do works, and maybe it’s not safe to do at night. But to not let traffic on either side through for 30 minutes is unacceptable. Road workers just sitting there on their phones without a care in the world. Tauranga is so disorganised it’s not funny anymore.
