Police are urging motorists to strictly observe posted speed limits as holiday traffic intensifies across the region, warning that enforcement will be tightened with no exceptions over the summer period.

Authorities say even small increases in speed can significantly worsen the severity of injuries in the event of a crash, affecting not only drivers but passengers and other road users.

In a post on Facebook, Bay of Plenty and Taupō Police said officers would be taking enforcement action wherever necessary to ensure public safety.

“The speed limit is just that – a limit, not a target,” police said.

“Even a small change in speed makes a big difference to injury severity in a crash – for you and everyone else involved.”

Police reminded drivers that they carry ultimate responsibility for keeping themselves, their passengers, and others on the road safe as holiday traffic reaches its peak.

The summer safety message comes as national traffic volumes rise and authorities anticipate increased risk on the road network.

Police said the goal was to help ensure the community could enjoy a memorable summer “for all the right reasons”.
