The Tauranga Moana Waitangi Day Festival returns to The Historic Village on Friday, February 6, with the event shaping up to be its biggest and most interactive yet.

Hosted by He Iwi Kotahi Tauranga Moana Charitable Trust, the free community event has become one of the region’s major Waitangi Day gatherings, drawing thousands each year to commemorate Te Tiriti o Waitangi and celebrate the cultural richness of Tauranga Moana.

The 2026 programme has several new and expanded features, including an Education Zone, Kōrero Corner, a Spinning Prize Wheel and Game Zone, alongside cultural workshops, live performances, food stalls, pony rides and family activities.

A key highlight is the Treaty Storyboard Trail – an interactive walk-through experience that guides families and visitors through stories of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the local history of the region.

“These additions support our kaupapa of bringing Te Tiriti o Waitangi to life in accessible, engaging and enjoyable ways, while deepening understanding of Tauranga’s history,” festival director Monique Edlinger said.

A range of free health checks and wellbeing services will also be available from local providers.

“It’s about strengthening our community in every sense,” He Iwi Kotahi chair Richard Cameron said.

The festival will run from 10am to 3pm, beginning with a karakia led by local kaumātua, followed by the Royal New Zealand Navy flag-raising ceremony and the singing of the national anthem.

Local talent and long-standing supporter of the festival, Mabel Wharekawa-Burt, will return as MC.

He Iwi Kotahi invites everyone to enjoy the food and market stalls and take part in a day centred on unity, culture and connection.

Entry is free, with koha welcomed.

Travelling by bus is encouraged, with some free parking available onsite.
