Mount Maunganui-based event series Ginger’s Pop-Ups has been awarded the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award at the prestigious 2025 New Zealand Event Awards, held in Hamilton this week.

Founded in 2024 by event manager Lisa Rooney, owner of Blabla Events, Ginger’s Pop-Ups has rapidly grown into a nationwide movement creating inclusive, safe, and celebratory spaces for women and gender minorities within the rainbow community.

The award recognises the initiative’s impact in promoting belonging, wellbeing, and visibility for often marginalised voices in New Zealand.

‘In a time where diversity, equity and inclusion is being stripped away, it’s powerful to see the NZ Event Awards upping their game,’ said Rooney.

“The rainbow community is such a kind and supportive one, yet so constantly under attack. This award is a win for them - a chance to feel recognition, representation, and belonging. It’s especially important for regions such as the Bay of Plenty to celebrate an award like this, so those within the rainbow community can feel more valued and less isolated.’

Since launching in July 2024, Ginger’s Pop-Ups has delivered a series of sold-out events across the country. As well as music events, highlights include panel discussions featuring high-profile figures such as Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau, Black Ferns legend Maia Jackman, and Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson. Ginger's Pop-Ups also delivers wellness-focused multi-day retreats in native bush settings supporting mental, social and physical wellbeing; and a podcast platform featuring global voices. These provide safe, inclusive, and empowering experiences for women and gender minorities.

The DEI award acknowledges both the scale and the deep social impact of Ginger’s work. Thousands have attended events, with feedback highlighting the profound effect on mental health, social connection, and community belonging.

Ginger’s operates as a not-for-profit, allowing it to keep ticket prices accessible. All sponsors and partners align with the kaupapa of inclusivity and support for the rainbow community.

"This is proof of what happens when we look after each other," Rooney said. "Every event is powered by heart, volunteers, and a community determined to protect its people."

Rooney, who was a top-four finalist for Best Emerging Event Professional in 2023, has quickly become a leading figure in inclusive event design in New Zealand.
